Autism in children: signs
According to experts, autism can manifest itself in children even in infancy. It is customary to attribute the diagnosis to disorders. It is caused by disorders of the nervous system and brain development. It is wrong to believe that this violation deprives the child of a full life. Autists can adapt to the outside world, communicate with people, work and make their dreams come true. In the material: “Brilliant autists: happy creators with super features”, many great names. They argue that autism in children needs to be redefined from a different perspective.
Autism in children: signs by which a diagnosis can be recognized
The sooner parents reveal signs of autism in children, the easier it will be for them to understand the child. Some mothers and fathers are perplexed why the baby behaves strangely. They try to force him to do something, but they cannot. They want to see from him adequate reactions, emotions, but this does not happen. This is because they expect “standard” behavior from the child. Parents use methods as for all children. But in this case, a different approach is needed.
Usually, parents notice abnormalities in the behavior of the baby, from about 18 months.
To determine autism in children, signs should be observed continuously. Just one coincidence is not enough. This is a triad of symptoms manifested in different areas:
The interests of the child are limited. A constant desire to organize objects, a repeating repertoire of behavior.
The child can not interact with others, communication disorders.
So, how to identify autism in children:
The baby is already a year old, but he does not attempt to talk – he does not babble;
In a year, the baby does not gesticulate: it does not wave its hand “bye-bye”, does not point at the toys;
Does not smile at all or does it extremely rarely;
At 16 months, he can not pronounce even light words;
At 2 years old, he does not speak independently phrases of two words. It can only repeat the words behind the interlocutor, like an echo (echolalia);
When they want to pick him up, he does not betray emotions and does not demonstrate “preparation for action”. Usually, children understand that they will be picked up now. They begin, in anticipation, to wave their arms randomly, or shrink, preparing the body for lifting;
Strange reaction to external stimuli, reaction to sounds or music;
He likes to swing from side to side, as if lulling himself;
Weakly reacts to pain, but sharply to touch;
Doesn’t like to dress;
You point your hand at something, but the child is looking at the hand, and not in the indicated direction;
What other symptoms of autism can children have?
Symptoms of autism in children, which are less significant:
Selective Nutrition Disorder. The problem of selectivity in food. The child refuses certain dishes or products. But this feature is often observed in many children under 5 years of age.
Do not look in the eye, look away. Specialists are asked to take into account the culture and norms of behavior in the country. Some children are so raised.
Does not show attention when his name is by name. This is also characteristic of other mental disorders.
He does not like to get a haircut, swim or comb. Attempts to do this may end in hysteria.
3 and 5 year old children may have other symptoms of autism:
Scanty observed emotional range. Weak manifestation of emotions;
It seems that the child has become withdrawn and “goes into himself”, isolated from the outside world;
He cannot intuitively determine the mood and intentions of other people, even those close to whom he lives permanently;
Avoid approaching other people;
Poor understanding of the mood of a group of people and individual individuals. Regardless of age and gender;
They cannot determine and navigate in a social setting;
Such children are not prone to imitate behavior;
They rarely gesticulate during a conversation;
Limited vocabulary. Either he is rich, but the child uses only monosyllabic answers and short phrases, as if by pattern;
Incorrect setting of pronouns in meaning.
Little or no talk about their emotions, feelings;
Rarely do they ask for something and poorly express their needs;
Echolalia, a repetition of words after other people, is increasingly manifesting itself. In this case, do not build phrases on their own;
They do not understand non-verbal communication: the language of views, gestures, facial expressions;
There is no sense of danger;
Likes to rotate objects, observe their movement;
They may be attached to some object, not necessarily a toy.
Some symptoms of autism in children can occur to a greater or lesser extent. It all depends on the complexity of the autism spectrum disorder. If a child has a highly functional form of autism, then according to studies, at 8-15 years of age, their spelling indicators did not differ from another group. And in adulthood, spelling skills even improved and exceeded the results of the control group. But the indicators were worse in another study, at the level of understanding of speech and the opinions of the interlocutor. This again proves that even if it seems to the parents that the child understood them, this is not always the case.
