Audiological screening. Newborn hearing test

Any mother understands that after the baby is born, an endless series of tests and examinations does not end. Only now observations are made not of the pregnant woman, but of the baby itself. Audiological screening is one such examination. This type of diagnosis is possible only after obtaining parental consent. No one will forcefully diagnose the baby. Therefore, the responsibility to diagnose or not is entirely the responsibility of the parents. Perhaps this article will help you in making a decision.

Audioscreening for newborns

Audio screening of newborns consists of two stages.

The first is screening.
A newborn who is 3-4 days of age is examined by hearing with a special device. This is done in a maternity hospital. If you were discharged earlier than this time, then the doctor should set a date when you need to be diagnosed.
The second is diagnostic.
It is no longer made to newborns, but to infants under the age of 3 months. Diagnosis is carried out in a deaf center. They are given to all children who have not passed screening (stage 1) and to children who have a probability of hearing loss.
Causes that increase the likelihood of hearing loss
There are a number of factors that can increase the risk of hearing loss in children.

The presence of hearing impairment in close relatives.
Hereditary syndromic pathology.
If a woman suffered a contagious or viral disease during gestation.
The mother had toxicosis.
Severe ante- and intrapartum hypoxia of the fetus.
Asphyxia of the newborn.
Childbirth at an early stage, critical prematurity.
Portability.
Small children, or with extremely low birth weight.
Congenital pathology of the maxillofacial skeleton.
Intracranial injuries sustained during childbirth.
Severe hypoxic-ischemic damage to the central nervous system.
Severe hypoxic hemorrhagic damage to the central nervous system.
Hemolytic disease of the newborn.
Persistent and (or) severe hyperbilirubinemia.
If the treatment of the newborn included the use of agents with an ototoxic effect.
What else you need to know about audiological screening

You can find the results of audio screening in the history of childbirth, the development of the newborn (medical history), and a statement of discharge. If the documents of the newborn did not find information about the ongoing audiological screening, then it will be done at the children’s clinic upon admission.

A neonatologist must tell the mother what the diagnostic results are. If audio screening has not been performed, then the specialist should also notify the parent.

If the results of screening in the maternity ward were not very good, then do not rush to worry. This does not mean that the crumbs have hearing loss. To make an accurate diagnosis, you need to wait for the second stage of audio screening.

4 degrees of hearing loss
Depending on the factor that provokes hearing impairment, there are 4 degrees of hearing loss. Each of them has specific symptoms.

The kid hears sounds and voices well next to him. But the noise in the distance does not hear, and therefore does not react to it in any way.
The baby distinguishes the voices of adults at a distance of no more than 4 meters, and a whisper no further than 1 meter.
The child does not hear a whisper, and recognizes loud speech no further than 2 meters from himself.
4 degree of hearing loss is the most difficult. The kid absolutely does not show a reaction to a whisper. He does not distinguish loud conversation even close.
If a child has hearing impairment, and this has been confirmed twice, then the specialist will tell you what to do next. In the modern world, children with hearing loss can live a full life. Follow the recommendations of a specialist. Depending on the degree of hearing loss and its cause, a treatment suitable for the child will be drawn up, or tips that will help him feel comfortable.
