Sinusitis: symptoms in children

Sinusitis is a complex and dangerous disease that must be treated immediately, as the symptoms in children have been found. Today, medicine offers many ways to effectively treat, with a timely response. Symptoms of sinusitis in children are described below, especially chronic and acute sinusitis

Sinusitis: symptoms in children at any age
Sinusitis – appears due to the inflammatory process of the maxillary sinuses. According to statistics, it often affects children of preschool, school age. Acute sinusitis is usually observed in the autumn-winter or spring period, when the number of different infections among the population increases sharply. Due to untimely treatment, it can progress to a chronic form. Therefore, it is so important to timely identify signs of sinusitis in children. For this, you should contact specialized medical specialists.

Acute and chronic sinusitis: symptoms in children

The maxillary sinuses in girls and boys complete development only by 4-6 years. Therefore, in infants, such a disease is not observed. As mentioned above, it often affects preschoolers. Because they are less resistant to seasonal infections that spread during colds.

Symptoms depend on the severity of the disease and the complications that precede it. If acute sinusitis occurs in children, the following occur:

Nasal congestion, not eradicated by vasoconstrictor drugs.
The face hurts, especially in the cheeks, around the nose.
Poor appetite. Food for children seems absolutely tasteless, because they practically do not feel its aroma.
Severe headaches. In children, the maxillary sinuses are small and fill up faster with pus. Therefore, sinusitis in children is more difficult to tolerate at times than in adults. They suffer more and at the same time do not understand how to help themselves.
Nasal discharge. If the child has catarrhal sinusitis, the discharge is mucous, and with purulent – purulent. The latter often do not flow out through the nose, but flow into the esophagus along the back of the throat. And this leads to additional irritation of the child.
Signs of sinusitis in children under the age of 6 years are very pronounced, so it is difficult not to notice them. In order not to start the disease, it is necessary to respond to it immediately. Indeed, in small patients, many processes proceed very quickly and lead to serious complications.

If sinusitis bothers the child from 2 to 4 times a year, then it is already considered chronic. It differs in the following features:

difficulty breathing through the nose;
causeless crying, moods;
mucus from the nose of a different nature;
lethargy, the child quickly gets tired even with minor loads;
pains in the forehead, which are aggravated if you ask the baby to bend over;
the baby feels an unpleasant odor in the nasopharynx;
a slight increase in temperature (sometimes);
it seems to the child as if something is bursting inside the nose.
Other symptoms

Symptoms in children may not immediately indicate sinusitis. Sometimes parents perceive them as signs of completely different diseases. But you need to know that nocturnal cough, snoring, stuffy ears and the notorious otitis media are also related to the described disease.

When to go to the doctor
There are signs of sinusitis in children, which in no case can be ignored:

Prolonged headache, which is not eliminated by appropriate medications.
The lethargy of the child, his unwillingness to get out of bed, open his eyes.
Vomiting with headache, vague consciousness.
The recurrence of high fever after a week of a cold illness, subjected to proper treatment.
Reduction of discharge from the nose, their complete absence.
Sinusitis, like other similar diseases, does not tolerate any self-medication. And even if its manifestations are almost imperceptible, a visit to the doctor will not be superfluous. It is better to be safe at once than to suffer from the consequences later.

Is sinusitis dangerous?
The sinuses are located close to the orbits of the eyes, so sinusitis directly threatens the health of vision. If left untreated, the child may experience other medical conditions, such as hemisinusitis and pansinusitis. But the most dangerous threat of this disease is, of course, meningitis. It develops due to the penetration of pus into the lining of the brain and leads to death. With a timely response to the signs of sinusitis, you can get rid of it without a lot of time. Today there are many effective treatment methods designed specifically for children of different ages. They are more gentle and easier tolerated by children in a psycho-emotional sense.
